I began my
art career with a curiosity about Navajo belt
weaving. Through
meditation and
experimentation, I discovered a process for Navajo belt weaving. My discovery of Navajo
belt weaving created
opportunities for me to learn about the weaving legacy in my family,
talk with
scholars, travel to New York & Peru, and learn about myself as
a Diné, as the people
known as Navajo call
themselves .
I
communicate my experiences as a human and a Diné
through my art. I
want to convey my life experiences that I
observe, interpret and experience through handspinning yarn from raw
wool or
hand-stamping texture and designs on my silver jewelry.
My completed pieces, whether textile or body
adornment, are like threads in the woven fabric of my life.
My
discovery of belt weaving has taken me on an enriched
journey I never expected. I
have
connected with my past, present and future.
I always remember to acknowledge, thank and commerate my
ancestors for
gifting me with a legacy of weaving and metalworking.
